My Son Pinocchio
My son Pinocchio evaluation
Research
When the play was talked about happening I immediately got on the computers and was looking up about the show and watching clips of shows, and for my character I wanted to be (Stew) I mainly focused in on them to see what their mannerisms are like and how Stew acted on stage since they were a made up character for the show, I used some of the awkward sassy acts for the show, this also links in with costumes since I tried finding good ones of Stew but there weren't many good representations of her so I shared a costume with Stew, I also watched movies and focused on how the ensemble reacted to main characters and how they are important to show.
Auditions:
When audition week started I felt very nervous as I felt like I would of made a fool of my self but I practised lines before hand to make sure I was as prepared as possible. When I went into the audition I was asked to do the blue fairy line as the character I'm playing, Stu. When I went in I tried to channel the character stew and thought deeply about the best way I could execute this and how I could portray stew most effectively through this short line. The next audition was the singing one and I could of done better since I couldn't sing but I tried anyways.
Choreography:
Stew/Sue: The movements for the fairy was supposed to be very delicate and elegant but the fairy I'm playing as (Stew/Sue) they normally mess stuff up and a bit ditsy.
Ensemble: This one was a bit complicated since i played 3 different background characters but it was easy to slip into, some of the moves we did for ensemble weren't that big but the pleasure island bit involved a lot of big movements since you had to come off as confident and mean. The perfect child you had to come across off as flawless on stage constantly putting on a smile making sure theirs not a mistake made since they were created to be perfect. The ensemble has a vital part of the performance because it gives a more realistic atmosphere and it makes the audience feel more included in show. The ensemble is also important because if one scene is executed the ensemble can fill in for that scene to make it as though there wasn't one.
Costume
Stew/Sue: I shared a costume with the other Stew's since I was not able to find one, and it fit Stew's colour theme and gives off the impression of a clumsy ditsy fairy. I also got colourful makeup done along with a crown hat.
Father 3: I choose a blue navy suit for the father 3 costume because it was the first thing i thought of a father would wear, and then I got my hair gelled back along with makeup.
Perfect Child: I wore a blue shirt and a tie with brown shorts with makeup and hair done to seem like there's no imperfections about my character.
Pleasure Island Child: I wore the same thing I did for the perfect child only My clothes and hair was messed up and I wore the tie around my hair and lipstick was smudged across my mouth.
Props
For props I used a wand for Stew and used it through out the show to cast a spell for whale in the end scene, we also used a contract that Geppeto had to sign. For the start of a show we also used party poppers to celebrate the Blue Fairy's success rate. For ensemble I used loads of things like a book for the perfect child to read through during satisfaction guaranteed scene, fake smokes and drinks and donkey tails during pleasure island scene.
Prep days before show
When we went to the arc to get used to the atmosphere before shows started, we went through many vocal warm ups like 'Oh when the saints' and '12345', one of the days Sophia taught us a way to use our voice safely to project it from the stage to the audience and to the back of the room. We then went through a full run of the show on stage and costume run on Monday because it was red cast the day after so everyone can be prepared also went through many rehearsals before that and worked on many scenes to see if they needed to be worked on and moved all of the props and costumes to the arc.
Show Day
Day 1: Today was red cast which I was stew and I was very nervous, before hand I got my costume on and went down to the makeup room to get my makeup hair and leaf crown fitted on, I had a mini stress out before show started and when I went on stage it flew away and I only
felt a bit nervous but I just got straight into it and I knew eyes were on me because my mam, step sister and my best friend came so I tried my best but I personally think it was going great until I forgot one of my lines and I had to improvise one on the spot, it wasn't great but it would do. After that incident the rest of the show went well and I was not as nervous anymore and was proud of myself for being up on the stage and just showing of that confidence I knew I had.
Day 2: Today we had three shows and one of them was a relaxed performance for people who find theatre scary and overwhelming, the flashing lights or loud bangs were not included in any scene or unexpected moments like the pleasure island children stomping and squirting they're guns at the audience. By doing the relaxed performance it allows everyone to be included and take part n the same magical experience. After, we did a different cast which was blue and I was an ensemble which I didn't mind as much but it was personally so fun being different characters through out the show and changing my mannerisms and attitude was so good (different characters I was mainly a father, then a perfect child and then a pleasure island kid).
Day 3: Today was the last day playing as red fairy, I was so sad but it was a pleasure to play as Sue/Stew the fairy for comedic purposes but last red cast show went great and loved being stew one last time. The rest of the day went good, next cast was green cast which I was an ensemble, one of the shows was a relaxed performance so how i managed to do that was to sing a bit quieter and not make really loud noises for the audience and after that show it went on like usual and I got the hang on swapping costumes and going down to the makeup room and getting my makeup fixed me faith and daisy worked together and thought of our family dynamic before hand to show to the audience.
Rest of shows: All of the other shows went smoothly all though there were some things that I needed to work on, for example I needed to get my self out there more and go front stage more and sing a lot louder, those are my personal beefs. For perfect child it was all going great and keeping up that perfect appearance through out all of the act was weird since I never smile so much and to seem flawless was fun and being the total opposite when I was a pleasure island child was fun as well since I could act really reckless and rude as much as I wanted.
Final Show: It was so weird coming back to the arc and getting into costume and going and stage for the final time, I never had any doubts about today and thought it would go well, when it came to the final part it was really emotional for me and others because it was just an amazing show to do and work with really amazing people.
Audience
When I introduced myself as Sue on stage it got the audience laughing, it was the way I introduced myself on stage and my energy that was making them like me as a character, the primary kids loved when we used the party poppers and our emitting energy, when it was the relaxed performance coming to see us we just needed to be quieter as to not make them nervous for all relaxed performance shows. When I was an ensemble they were very captivated of what we were doing totally different thing to the main characters and doing the no strings dance and making the audience join in with us to make them included.
Improvements and Positives
Through out the show as Stew, I was always standing their pulling faces and making comments and flapped my arms, I wish I did more like very energetic and more physical and running about like a mischievous fairy I was. The positives was just being really funny for the audience and just being a realistic character to play on stage since they aren't really fairy like the others.
Vocal Performance
Every time before shows I always did vocal warm ups but not to harsh for my voice. During shows I needed to keep facial expressions and voice on point when on stage which was not that difficult but linking to improvements I could of done a lot better and sang a lot louder.
Goals
For the future I definitely want to go for a main part and step into that spotlight I know i can be in, I also want to be more confident and louder in performing since it's what I have been looking at to improve for a while and to do that I shouldn't care what other people think since everyone else was there for the same reason.
